Custom Case | Carbide Slitting Saw 60 × 1.5 × 16 mm, 72 Teeth for Aerospace Fasteners and Rubber Components

Project Background

A customer from the aerospace industry approached us for a custom carbide slitting saw solution used in the production of precision aerospace fasteners and rubber components.

The application required extremely clean slot edges, excellent dimensional consistency, and stable cutting performance during continuous production runs. Conventional HSS cutters experienced rapid wear and inconsistent cutting quality, especially when processing high-value aerospace components where burr control and surface finish are critical.

To meet these requirements, a custom solid carbide slitting saw was manufactured according to the customer’s specifications.

Custom Tool Specification

Item Specification
Cutter Type Solid Carbide Slitting Saw

Thickness 1.5 mm (0.059″)
Bore 16 mm (0.630″)
Teeth 72T
Material Solid Tungsten Carbide
Coating Uncoated
Application Aerospace Fasteners and Rubber Components

Although this project utilized an uncoated cutter, PVD coatings such as TiAlN, AlCrN, and DLC are also available for applications requiring higher wear resistance or longer tool life.

Challenges of Aerospace Component Machining

Machining aerospace fasteners and rubber-related components presents several challenges:

  • Tight dimensional tolerances
  • Strict burr control requirements
  • High surface finish expectations
  • Long production cycles requiring stable tool life
  • Minimal vibration during thin-slot cutting operations

Any instability in the cutting process may lead to increased scrap rates and additional finishing operations, resulting in higher production costs.

Customized Solution

To improve cutting stability and tool life, the cutter geometry was optimized specifically for this application.

The 72-tooth configuration provides smoother cutting action and reduces cutting load per tooth, helping to minimize burr formation while improving surface quality.

The solid carbide construction delivers excellent rigidity and wear resistance, making it suitable for precision slotting operations commonly found in aerospace manufacturing environments.

The 1.5 mm cutting width also helps reduce material waste while maintaining excellent dimensional accuracy.

Results Achieved

After implementation, the customer reported several improvements:

  • Improved slot consistency
  • Reduced burr formation
  • Better surface finish
  • Longer production stability
  • Reduced downtime caused by tool changes

The customized carbide slitting saw successfully met the customer’s production requirements and became part of their regular tooling setup.
