Custom Case | Solid Carbide Slitting Saw 80 × 1.65 × 22 mm, 50 Teeth for Chainsaw Guide Bar Manufacturing

Project Background

A manufacturer of garden tool components required a custom solid carbide slitting saw for precision slot milling during the production of chainsaw guide bars.

The application involved continuous production with demanding requirements for slot accuracy, edge quality, and tool life. Due to the high production volume and the abrasive nature of the workpiece materials, conventional cutting tools experienced rapid wear and inconsistent cutting performance.

To improve productivity and machining stability, a custom solid carbide slitting saw was developed according to the customer’s specifications.

Custom Tool Specification

Item Specification
Cutter Type Solid Carbide Slitting Saw
Diameter (OD) 80 mm (3.150″)
Thickness 1.65 mm (0.065″)
Bore 22 mm (0.866″)
Teeth 50T
Material Solid Tungsten Carbide

Application Chainsaw Guide Bar Manufacturing

The customer selected an uncoated cutter for the initial production runs.

For higher cutting speeds, abrasive materials, or extended production cycles, customized PVD coatings such as TiAlN, AlCrN, and DLC are available to improve wear resistance and extend tool life.

Challenges in Chainsaw Guide Bar Slot Milling

Guide bar manufacturing requires highly consistent slot geometry to ensure smooth chain movement and reliable product performance.

Typical machining challenges include:

  • Maintaining tight slot width tolerances
  • Controlling burr formation along slot edges
  • Reducing tool wear during long production runs
  • Achieving consistent dimensional accuracy
  • Minimizing machine downtime caused by tool replacement

Because guide bars are produced in large quantities, tooling reliability has a direct impact on production efficiency and manufacturing costs.

Customized Solution

The 80 mm diameter cutter was selected to meet the required cutting depth and machine configuration.

The 1.65 mm cutting width was optimized for guide bar slot dimensions while minimizing cutting forces and maintaining rigidity.

A 50-tooth configuration provides an effective balance between cutting smoothness and chip evacuation, helping maintain stable machining performance during continuous production.

Manufactured from premium solid tungsten carbide, the cutter offers excellent wear resistance and dimensional stability for demanding industrial applications.

Results Achieved

After implementation, the customer achieved several improvements:

  • Improved slot dimensional consistency
  • Reduced burr formation
  • Increased tool life
  • Reduced machine downtime
  • Improved overall production efficiency

The customized carbide slitting saw became a reliable production tool for the customer’s guide bar manufacturing process.
